ALICE Households

Two metrics are overarching indicators of broad-based prosperity: Gallups’s Well-Being Index and the proportion of households struggling to meet basic needs, measured by the United Way ALICE report.

ALICE refers to the population in our communities that are Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. The ALICE population represents those among us who are working but due to childcare costs, transportation challenges, high cost of living and so much more are living paycheck to paycheck.

The percent of households living below the ALICE threshold includes includes two groups: households living below the poverty line and households that are living above poverty but are still living from paycheck to paycheck. This second component is the ALICE household group. ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed; these families typically could not withstand a $400 hit to their household budget without being put at risk.
