black boardroom leadership institute (bbli): strengthening nonprofit leadearship

The Black Boardroom Leadership Institute (BBLI) is designed to empower nonprofit leaders and individuals with the knowledge and skills to serve effectively on nonprofit boards. Through this program, organizations can enhance board leadership, strengthen governance, and develop strategies to maximize their impact in the community.

BBLI offers two six-month tracks:

  • The Nonprofit Track – Designed for organizations committed to strengthening their board leadership and engagement practices.
  • The Leadership Track – Tailored for Black professionals looking to prepare for and thrive in nonprofit board service.

We are currently accepting applications for the 2025 Leadership Track.

This program is designed to build a strong pipeline of Black leaders prepared to serve on local nonprofit boards. Over six months, participants will gain a foundational understanding of board governance, develop a leadership approach aligned with their values, and learn how to drive meaningful impact within the organizations they serve.

ideal candidates

Ideal candidates for the BBLI Leadership Track are Black leaders—both emerging and experienced—who demonstrate a passion for civic engagement and community impact. We are seeking individuals who lead with integrity, are driven by purpose, and are committed to developing their unique leadership voice.

Candidates should be able to express the challenges they’ve faced in seeking board service or serving authentically as a board member. Strong applicants will share personal experiences that highlight a desire for leadership growth and a clear connection between their values and the way they hope to serve their communities.

Participants selected for the program will be those who are ready to amplify their voice, refine their leadership approach, and make meaningful contributions to nonprofit organizations across our region.

Applications will be reviewed and selected by the BBLI Advisory Council based on the following criteria:

  • Need to Participate – Demonstrated barriers or challenges to board placement or service
  • Leadership Growth – Desire to develop an authentic leadership style and pursue growth opportunities
  • Compelling Narrative – Clarity and effort shown in articulating motivations and experiences
  • Board Interest – Passion for leadership and the desire to serve effectively on a nonprofit board
  • Program Commitment – Availability and dedication to fully engage in the six-month program
